For Gaius Kensington, Esq., it’s all about legacy. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a pouch of gold pieces in one hand, Gaius has been a member of high society his entire life. His father owned the most successful and respected steed dealership in the land of Caprica, doing business with royalty and the rich and famous on a daily basis. As a result Gaius always believed himself to be at the top of the social ladder, despite never doing anything himself to earn such a standing. Believing he could accomplish anything he wanted because he was never told “no” once in his life, he decided as a pre-teen that he would become the greatest knight in history – without actually considering the work that would go into such a claim. He received a rude awakening upon being enrolled in Paladin training; when pitted against the other boys in the program, boys from different social classes whom he assumed he was better than, Gaius found himself constantly bested by his peers who were used to working much harder for what they wanted. He became the target of their teasing, both for his initial lack of ability and for his holy symbol; Gaius’ family worshipped Shinare, goddess of wealth and trade (for obvious reasons), whose symbol was a Griffon’s wing but was mockingly called a chicken’s wing by the boys. When he would fail to do well on a test, his classmates would make clucking sounds at him – as a result, he grew furious any time he was called a chicken and vowed to stand up to anyone who did so. When his Paladin training came to an end, Gaius was not assigned a mentor to train under and it was implied by his instructors that he should return home and work at his father’s dealership. Worried that such an action would seem like a failure and concerned with how such a failure would tarnish his legacy, he decided he did not need a mentor to become a great Paladin. At the age of 18 Gaius Kensington, Esq. picked up his sword and armor and set out on his own to conquer every challenge put in front of him so that he could someday be known as the greatest knight who ever lived, experience and cluckers be damned.
